Archaeological Museum

Founded in 1919, the Antalya Museum of Archaeology and Ethnography, situated 2 kilometres (1.25 miles) from the city centre absolutely should not be missed. The large archaeological collection on display offers an excellent survey of the great periods in Pamphylia's history, stretching all the way back to the Neolithic era, with other artefacts dating from the Bronze Age up to Hellenistic and Roman periods. Highlights of the collection include statues and sarcophagi from nearby Aspendos and Perge.

Kaleici Old City & Hadrian's Gate

Kaleici literally means “inside the fortress”, and until modern times the ancient city was confined entirely within its walls. This is the historic centre of Antalya and features structures dating from the Roman, Byzantine, Seljuk, and Ottoman eras. One such structure is the sublime Alaaddin Camii Mosque, first built in 1230. The mosque's Fluted Minaret is decorated with dark blue tiles and visible from virtually anywhere in the city. Another iconic ancient structure is Hadrian’s Gate, a triple-arched ceremonial gate erected to honour Emperor Hadrian on the occasion of his visit to Antalya in 130 C.E.

Termessos

Termessos is famous for having been one of the few cities to successfully repel a siege by none other than Alexander the Great. Little else is known about the origins of this Pisidian town, except that it was a strategically important ancient hill-fort. Located on the slopes of the Güllük Dağı, situated about 30 kilometres (19 miles) from Antalya, today it is part of a large national park and features ruins that, while not so well-preserved as those at Aspendos or Perge are perhaps more poignant given their bucolic woodland setting.

Aspendos Antique Theatre

Perhaps best known for having Turkey’s best-preserved antique theatre, Aspendos was an ancient city in what was known as Pamphylia, located about 40 kilometres (25 miles) east of Antalya. The city was founded around 1000 B.C.E. by Greeks who may have come from Argos and rose to prominence in the 5th century B.C.E. as a centre of trade. Aspendos, like nearby Perge, is a trove of ancient Greek and Roman architectural masterpieces and should not be missed.

Saklikent Ski Centre

Antalya is one of the few places in the world where you can swim in the morning and ski in the afternoon. From January to March, this ski resort offers easy to moderate skiing as well as several cafes. Located about an hour's drive from the Dedeman Antalya, Saklikent is the ideal destination for a day trip spent on the slopes. Of course, you will also want to make sure to hit the beach for sundown after a day of skiing – just because you can!

Olympos

The mountain, the village and the national park are all well worth the 90 kilometre (56 mile) trip from Antalya. The area within the coastal national park, which includes Mount Olympos, offers excellent hiking, mountain biking, rock climbing and sea kayaking. Equipment for all of these activities is available for sale or rent in the village. Guided tours of the region as well as the remains of the Hellenistic city of Olympos are also available. While you are in Olympos make sure to visit the Chimera, a naturally occurring eternal flame once believed to be the forge of the god Hephaestus.
