The Naval Museum, on August 31, 1897, the Minister of Navy Bozcaadalı Hasan Hüsnü Pasha and the orders of the Shipyard Commander Admiral Arif Hikmet Pasha and Major Süleyman Nutki by Major Süleyman Nutki as one of the rare examples of the world in the building belonging to the Tersane-i Amire "as one of the rare examples of the world" and Library Administration ". Cemal Pasha, who was Navy Naziri in 1914, reformed the museum in the museum as in all the branches of maritime and brought Deniz Captain Painter Ali Sami Boyar to the directorate and enabled the reorganization of the museum in scientific terms. Ali Sami Boyar published the first catalog of the museum in 1917 and established the "Ship Model Workshop" and "Mulaj (Casting) Workshop" in which the full and half models of Turkish ships were built and the "Mulaj (Casting) Workshop" formed the development of the museum.

The museum, which was moved to the Nakkaşhane building in Kasımpaşa in 1933, was opened under the name of the "Navy Museum Directorate", II. In World War II, it was transferred to Ankara, Izmit and Niğde to protect it from possible destruction. In 1946, it was decided to establish the museum again in Istanbul and first was stored in the building of today's North Sea Field Command, and then Dolmabahçe Mosque was moved to Hünkar Mahfeli. During the 410th anniversary of the Preveze Naval Victory in the autumn of 1948, Haluk Şehsuvaroğlu, the new museum manager, was opened to visitors under the name of "Marine Museum and Archive Directorate" during the 410th anniversary of the Preveze Naval Victory. During the expansion of the Dolmabahçe road in 1956, the garage and Kayıkhane building, which was one of the outbuildings of the museum, was expropriated, and the archives and documents found here were moved to the Northern part of the Dolmabahçe Palace (today's Naval History Archive Building) Department. Finally, on September 27, 1961, the Turkish Admiral Captain-i Derya Barbaros Hayrettin Pasha was moved to his place in the new building on 4 October 2013. Turkey's largest and largest collection variety in the field of maritime is one of the few museums in the world.
