Yivli Minaret Mosque
Yivli Minaret Mosque

Yivli Minaret Mosque, also called Alaeddin Mosque or Ulucami, is one of the important symbols of Antalya. Located in Kaleiçi, Yivli Minaret Mosque is an important part of the Yivli Minaret Complex, which consists of the Yivli Minaret Madrasah, Yivli Minaret, Atabey Armağan Madrasah, Nigar Hatun Tomb, Mevlevihane and Zincirkıran Mehmet Bey Madrasah. It is stated that the first construction of the Yivli Minaret Mosque took place during the reign of Alaeddin Keykubat I (1220-1237), meaning that it is a work of the XIIIth century. The Yivli Minaret Mosque is a multi-domed structure and is the first of the multi-domed places of worship in Anatolia. The roof of the mosque is covered with six domes. These domes were built by Balaban Tavşi in 1372.

The mosque is rectangular and has one floor. The walls of the building are 1.08 meters thick. The upper part of the mosque consists of six sections with 12 columns oriented east and west. The domes were built in different sizes and using different transition elements. In the north-south direction of the mosque, the transition is provided with three different arches. Since different building materials and wall techniques were used towards the north, it is thought that this part was added later to the mosque structure.

The mosque itself is 16.5 meters wide and 26.5 meters tall. The mosque has two gates, one on the east and one on the north. The building was repaired for the first time in 1373 by Yunus oglu Mahmud oglu Mübarizeddin Mehmed. During the Republican period, it was restored many times in 1935, 1942-1943, 1953, 1964. In 1972, the north and south of the mosque was destroyed and the tile decorations were damaged due to the fire that broke out in the Külliye area. For this reason, the General Directorate of Foundations carried out extensive restoration works on the mosque first in 1973 and then in 1977.

Finally, in 2007, surface cleaning was carried out on the mosque walls and the brick and stone coverings that had become dysfunctional were restored. During these restorations, excavations were carried out inside the mosque and eight graves and numerous water channels were found. During the excavation, tiles in accordance with Seljuk architecture were found, but the discovery of architectural plates and fragments from the Roman and Byzantine periods raised the possibility that the mosque may have been used for commercial purposes or as a storage museum.
In addition, the fact that the Yivli Minaret was built independently of the mosque supports this idea. Yivli Minaret and Yivli Minaret Mosque, located in Kaleiçi, the center of Antalya, is a touristic attraction area with important symbolic and historical value. The landscaping and central location of the buildings around the Yivli Minaret Complex increase the number of visitors to this area.
