Having a big part of its land in Central Anatolia region and some part of its land in Mediterranean region, Konya is the largest city in Turkey in terms of area it covers. Konya, which is on the old Silk Road, has a significant location within the triangle of Kapadokya, Pamukkale and Antalya.
Beyşehir Lake, which is on the border of Konya-Isparta and on western part of Konya, is the third biggest lake in Turkey. Also it is the biggest fresh water lake. At the same time Beyşehir Lake, which is formed by Tectonic-Carstic events, is one of the most important national park of Turkey. Additionally, there are also some volcanic lakes within city territory. These are; round-shaped hollows formed around volcanic cones by the effect of volcanism. After filling of water to these hollows, small maar lakes like Acıgöl Maar and Meke Lake was formed.
Being wheat wardhouse of Turkey, Konya is the capital of the SMEs (Small and Medium Enterprises) with thousands of industrial organizations. Besides, thanks to Mevlana and new investments such as Dedeman Konya Convention Center tourism sector has gained importance within city economy. The museums in Konya, Seljuk artworks, recreation areas in forest, Meram Bağları, Çamlıköy in Akşehir, Yakamanastır, Kaleçamlığı, and Kızılören Çamlığı in Beyşehir are also other touristic places.
Konya has a name that changed many times up to now. As the rumour has it, in the old ages a monument was built in memory of a hero that saved the city from a monster who had been giving damages to the city and a picture telling this heroic event was drawn on this monument. And this monument was called Ikonion. In times, the name Ikonion was changed into Icconium. Then in Roman times its name changed with the emperor names such as Claudiconium, Colonia Selie, and Augusta İconium. The names Ycconium, Conium, Stancona, Conia, Cogne, Cogna, Konien, and Konia were seen appropriate for Konya which had been called Tokonion in Byzantine resources. This name which was said Kuniya by the Araps was not changed in Seljuk and Ottoman times and has been carried up to now.
In the excavations made in Çatalhöyük which is located in 10 km east of Çumra Town of Konya, 13 layers of settlement buildings were brougth into light. The earliest settlement layer dates back to B.C 5500 years. The first residental architecture and original foundlings belonging to the first holy structures were found here. Best known period of the settlement and urbanism in Çatalhöyük was appeared at 7th and 11th layers. These houses are one-storey and access to them is from a hole at the roof with a staircase. Wall of the houses are plastered and some pictures are drawn on it. These pictures are first examples of the pictures being drawn by the ancient times people to the walls. Moreover, the statuettes obtained in Çatalhöyük excavations give original information on beginning of the culture of worship to the mother goddess and beliefs of that period.
Hosting many civilizations from Hittittes to Phyrigas, Lydias and Persians, Konya was the capital city of Anatolian Seljuks and lived its golden era in terms of art and culture. The famous scientists, philosophers, poets, mutasavvıf (sufis), musicians, and masters of the other arts of that period were brought together in Konya. Scholars such as Bahaeddin Veled, Mevlana Celaleddin as the heads, and Kadı Burhaneddin, Kadı Sıraceddin, Sadreddin Konevi settled in Konya and made the city a cultural center with the works they produced. Especially Mevlana laid the foundation of the first enlightment philosophy in Anatolia with his works such as Mesnevi, Divan-ı Kebir which enlightened the humanity with their ideas and philosophy. With his comical and thought provoking anectodes, also Nasreddin Hodja is a wise person who made great contribution to the development of cultural and social life of Konya.
