Kyrenia itself is home to many places of historic interest. The commanding castle overlooks the horseshoe shaped harbour, which houses one of the oldest commercial shipwrecks in the world. High above the town is the crusader castle of St. Hilarion, from which there are stunning views of the northern coastline below and a few kilometres outside Kyrenia is the attractive village of Bellapais with its ancient ruined abbey.

There is plenty to explore in the surrounding area. To the south lie the walled city of Famagusta and the nearby ruins of the ancient city of Salamis. To experience nature at its most beautiful take a trip along the peninsula know as the "panhandle" to reach stretches of untamed countryside and deserted golden sandy beaches. For those who enjoy walking there are many beautiful mountain trails, where you can see rare species of plant and wildlife.

There are many good restaurants in and around Kyrenia specialising in freshly caught seafood, Turkish Cypriot and international cuisine.
